Projection — balance in today’s money and nominal

How it’s calculated

Monthly rate i = (1 + annual return)1/12 − 1. Each month: balance = balance × (1 + i) + contribution, with contributions stepping up each year by the escalation rate.
Today’s money = nominal ÷ (1 + inflation)years. Real monthly rate r = ((1 + post-retirement return) ÷ (1 + inflation))1/12 − 1.
Sustainable income = balance (today’s money) ÷ annuity factor, where annuity factor = (1 − (1 + r)−n) ÷ r over the months to the plan age. Required capital = target income × annuity factor.
Extra monthly top-up = shortfall at retirement ÷ future value of R1/month (with escalation). Returns are assumed net of fees and tax.
